Create Number Books (Part 1)

Lesson Narrative
In this lesson, students explore and identify common features of number books and take a walk around the school to record important objects or features to include in their number books. In the next lesson, students will create and share their own number books.
If students need additional support with the concepts in this lesson, refer back to Unit 2, Section C in the curriculum materials.

Required Preparation
- Gather a variety of number books for the class to look through.
- Gather materials from:
- Picture Books
- Find the Pair
- Math Stories
- Build Shapes
- Make or Break Apart Numbers
Suggested Centers
NoneModify the Launch of Activity 2, “School Walk,” to have students look for and count pieces of trash and recyclables during a school walk. Ask:
- “What kinds of trash do you think we might find on our walk?” (water bottles, soda cans, bottle caps, newspapers, plastic bags, paper cups, drink lids, hair ties, candy wrappers, straws, string, food containers)
- “How does picking up trash left on the ground and putting it in a trash can help the Earth?” (make the area cleaner, less pollution, safer for wildlife, cleaner water)
