Lesson Narrative
In a previous unit, students solved Add To, Result Unknown and Take From, Result Unknown story problems. In previous lessons, students solved Put Together, Total Unknown and Put Together/Take Apart, Both Addends Unknown story problems. In this lesson, students solve familiar types of story problems. Because the types of story problems are mixed, students need to make sense of what the story is asking them to do (MP1). Then students create their own story problem.

Suggested Centers
NoneModify the Launch of Activity 1, “All the Story Problems,” by engaging students in a discussion about the relationship between nature and the food we eat. Ask:
- “What are some fruits and vegetables that you, or people you know, like to eat?” (bananas, grapes, tomatoes, broccoli)
- “Where do fruits and vegetables come from?” (from plants, they grow in the ground or on bushes or trees)
Remind students that nature gives us a lot of the food we eat. The next time they have something to eat, ask them to think about whether or not all or some of it comes from nature.
