In previous lessons, students matched descriptions, equations, and discrete diagrams that represented multiplicative comparison. In this lesson, they write multiplication and division equations, draw diagrams, and use their understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division.

Extend the Launch of Activity 1, “A Book Drive,” by continuing the discussion about the book drive. Introduce the statement “reduce, reuse, and recycle,” and ask students what they think it means. Share responses. Explain that “reduce, reuse, and recycle” are three principles for taking care of the planet and using resources wisely. Ask what students think each principle means, and to give examples:
Ask students to identify the principle that the book drive is an example of (reuse). Emphasize that the principles “reduce, reuse, and recycle” are listed in order of how helpful each is to the planet, from most to least.
