The purpose of this Warm-up is to introduce the students to a new routine called True or False? that will be used throughout the year. The purpose of this True or False? is to give students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the equal sign. Because equations are less familiar to students, the teacher should read aloud each equation. When students are more familiar with equations, they will read the equations themselves. In the Activity Synthesis, students are asked to reword another student’s thinking and justify the answer in a different way (MP3).
Decide if each statement is true or false.
Be prepared to explain your reasoning.
Math Stories Stage 4 Recording Sheet
Math Stories Stages 1 and 4 Pictures
The purpose of this activity is for students to learn Stage 4 of the Math Stories center. One student poses an addition or subtraction story problem about a picture. Their partner represents and solves the story problem. Pages of picture books can also be used to help students generate stories.
The recording sheet includes directions and a line for recording an equation to represent each problem. Students do not need to write equations at this point in the unit. To avoid this distraction or possible confusion, consider using the recording sheet from Math Stories, Stage 3 until Section D.
