Pre-Lesson: See Extra Support Materials for Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 9.
In this lesson, students make the connection between roots and fractional exponents. They begin by using exponent rules to explore fractional exponents. Then students make the connection to roots by noticing that and that , as well. This means that . Students then practice using that equality to rewrite expressions in either form.
Note that any variables inside of a root or as a base of an exponent are assumed to be positive for this unit.
Create a new set of visual displays that includes the exponent rules. A sample display can be seen in the Launch of the second activity.
