The purpose of this True or False? is to elicit strategies students have for estimating. Students’ reasoning here helps to deepen their understanding of different estimation strategies and ways to describe how close an estimate is to an actual value, without performing the calculation. It also will be helpful later when students determine a reasonable estimate. Monitor for the ways students use the tens place and what they know about making a ten, as they reason about each statement.
Decide if each statement is true or false. Be prepared to explain your reasoning.
