These materials, when encountered before Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 10, support success in that lesson.
In this lesson, students evaluate expressions involving exponents, including fractional exponents, and roots. Students begin by noticing and wondering about a variety of exponent rules. Then students rewrite expressions to have only exponents or only roots. Finally, students apply their knowledge of exponent rules to interpreting an exponential equation that models a situation. As students apply their knowledge of exponent rules throughout this lesson, they look for and make use of structure (MP7). This connects to the associated Algebra 1 lesson in which students evaluate and interpret expressions involving exponents.
Technology isn't required for this lesson, but there are opportunities for students to choose to use appropriate technology to solve problems. We recommend making technology available.
