Pre-Lesson: See Extra Support Materials for Algebra 1, Unit 6, Lesson 10.
In this lesson, students extend their understanding of fractional exponents to include non-unit fractional exponents and connect them to roots with powers. They begin by recalling that fractions can be written as a product of a whole number and a unit fraction. Then students use that idea to rewrite values with fractional exponents as equivalent values using roots.
An optional activity is included to show students how fractional exponents could be used in real-world situations. If students need additional practice interpreting exponents in situations or would benefit from a less-abstract use of the concept, consider making time to work with the optional activity.
